Working caregivers are family members who care for a loved one plus hold a full-time job. Caregiving and working a job are two components when tied together create influences that affect a person's well-being.

A study by Eliza Corporation, in partnership with Altarum Institute, found that circumstantial life factors like financial stress, caregiving, and relationship issues have a clear impact on health and productivity. There are several other factors that affect a person's health but for the sake of this article, caregiving is my emphasis.

Today, 43.5 million adults care for loved ones aged 55 and over who are sick, frail, or disabled. They live with chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis. And another 14.9 million adults care for a loved one living with some form of dementia.

Employment and Caregiving

One out of six employees has caregiving responsibilities. They struggle to find their balance between elder care and their job responsibilities. How the working caregivers stats play out:

  • 66% of employed caregivers report arriving late, leaving early, or taking time off from work to tend to caregiving issues,
  • 20% have taken a leave of absence
  • Employees with caregiving responsibilities cost their employers an additional 8% in health care expenses (or an extra $13.4 billion per year for all U.S. employers).due to health related issues
  • Caregiving costs businesses roughly between $17.1 billion and $33.6 billion annually in lost productivity.

Because giving care while working full-time is so stressful, the effects can filter into other aspects of life causing strain in relationships and impede job performance too. And since working caregivers arrive to work late or leave early, their productivity suffers most days of the week.

This was my experience during the elder care years for my parents. We lived 125 miles apart and I worked full-time for a technology firm in Austin. It was hard for the three of us. Although my parents hired extra help for cooking and cleaning, they preferred having me around instead. What made it more difficult; More than anything, I wanted to help them. This was in 2002 when there was little talk about caregiving issues at work (those directed to aging relatives.)

My caregiving stress derived from not being there for my parents. Unlike others who suffer stress from doing too much, my anxiety came from doing too little. Unfortunately, my job required "hands-on" sales work in the office because the employer did not permit telecommuting. I admit there were many days that productivity was lost to worry. My employer, like many, did not truly understand the hardship people like us encountered. Oh, how I wished they had.
