Karen Ling

Occupational Therapist
Hi! My name is Karen and I'm an Occupational Therapist (MS, OTR/L) who graduated from New York University. Across both the medical and community settings, you may come across many OTs, but because what we do at each setting is so different, it may be hard to tell us apart from the other disciplines. In a hospital setting (ex: post-stroke, spinal cord injures, knee/hip replacement surgeries, etc.), most OTs will focus on what we call the Basic Activities of Daily Living (B-ADL) - activities such as putting on shirts/pants, transferring from wheelchair to toilet seat, and brushing your teeth with one hand. The difference between an OT and nursing staff is that, an OT will not be performing any of these activities for you Instead, our goal is to introduce you to new techniques and strategies so you can do it by yourself and do it as independently as possible.

My passion for helping the aging population is strong. I want to spread the word and help people understand that growing old can be a wonderful thing. I am interested in environmental modifications and can give recommendations to make your home a safer place to live in for years to come.

We all love our homes, but depending on different circumstances, the home we once loved can be dangerous (ex: uneven steps to the backyard/garden area, dim lighting in the hallways, hard to reach kitchen supplies, etc.). However, It is not impossible to prevent injury or implement modifications to make life easier. Focus on your strength and have a positive attitude because then you will have a positive mind, which will lead to a positive retired life.

"We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." - George Bernard Shaw
