11 Questions to Ask When Visiting a Retirement Community

Retirement communities range from modest to extravagant. But as you probably already know, there’s more to a community than how lavish it is.

In addition to asking about fees and ensuring you’re making a sound financial decision, you’ll want to find out what life will be like living there. Here are some questions to help you figure that out:

Questions About Activities

  1. What clubs are available? Retirement communities are great places to continue hobbies with new, like-minded friends—or to learn new things. Clubs may include such diverse activities as woodworking, scrapbooking, Scrabble, supporting sports teams and singing.

  2. What classes are available? Retirement communities should offer opportunities to expand your horizons. What have you always wanted to learn? You might take a class in Spanish, computers, salsa or archaeology.

  3. What fitness opportunities do you offer? Common classes include tai chi, water aerobics and yoga. But retirement communities are also coming up with lots of creative fitness activities. For example, Nintendo Wii competitions are popular.

  4. What social activities do you put on? Are there regular dances or parties?

  5. What excursions do you offer? Getting out on the town is always fun. Ask whether they have shopping trips and take residents to see interesting things in the city, including museums and plays.

  6. Do you have a singles group (if desired)?

  7. What’s the price to participate in any of the above? Not everything is always included in the base fees.

Other Questions

  1. What are the homeowners association rules? Get a written list. You want to make sure you can live with the requirements.

  2. Are pets allowed? Do you want a community filled with animals, or would you rather steer clear of them?

  3. Do you offer transportation for my personal needs in town? How do I make reservations? How much does it cost?

  4. What do you do for security? Are there security patrols or guards?
